I was lucky enough to see this statuette at the Ancient Lives Exhibition recently. The solid-cast bronze statuette from Ravenna is a votive offering representing either Laran, the Etruscan war-god, or the dedicator, who was probably an army-leader. His left leg is slightly advanced and has a slight smile, reminiscent of Greek Kouroi (youth statues). Inscription in Etruscan on right leg: THUCER HERMENAS TURUCE; Thucer Hermenas dedicated (me). 520 BC |
